The key difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles lies in their manufacture. A porcelain tile is a kind of ceramic that is made by mixing refined clay and other minerals such as silica, feldspar, and quartz fired to over 1200 degrees Celsius. This makes it denser, more homogenous, and more resistant to scratches than normal ceramics. Porcelain is also less porous than ceramic so it absorbs very little water. As a result, porcelain tile is more durable, making it ideal for heavy-traffic locations like shopping malls and airports.
Ceramic is formed by blending minerals and clay which is then fired to nearly 1000 degrees Celsius. Compared to porcelain, ceramic is fired at a lower temperature for less time, resulting in more porosity and less density.
In general, wall tiles are not suitable for your floor as they are less resistant to water and more slippery. That includes ceramic tile. However, porcelain floor tiles can be used on walls if they can support the tiles’ weight. Consult your tile manufacturer.
Tile finishes include polished, matte, honed, and glazed. A polished finish is a shiny and reflective surface that is smooth to the touch. A matte finish has a non-reflective surface. The same can be said for a low-gloss finish; it is also less slippery than a polished finish. A honed finish has a matte appearance with a slightly rough texture, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. Glazed tiles have a hard, non-porous surface that is scratch, stain, and moisture resistant, making them a versatile choice for any room.
Porcelain tiles work well in all weather conditions. They are also easy to maintain, durable, and resistant to slipping and frost. Because of these qualities, they may be used outdoors such as on pool decks, walkways, outdoor kitchens, and rooftop patios.
